9 TIPPS FOR A KICK-ASS SEDER

Let's face it, a lot of the Seder Eves are very boring. It doesn't take much to organise a banging, exciting, thought-provoking Seder. We can help. In nine steps.

1. No Seder Police

Yes, there is an order to a Seder because the word Seder itself means order. That being said, if you own a Seder, you're in charge. If you want to sing right off the bat, maybe go straight for the dramatic elements; that’s fine. Just have a plan. Know which part of the Haggadah you’ll skip and which part you’ll linger at.

2. First or second night

In 2022, the first Seder is on Friday, April 15 and the second on Saturday, April 26. The two are all the same, so it depends on when your friends, family and guests are available.

3. Invite them as soon as possible and send a reminder.

Some people have already planned their Pesach for next year; some you can invite the morning before the Seder. Send a reminder; it’s always good.

4. How long should it be?

As long as you can. Some people Seder into the night and others rush to the macaroni soup and stop there. It's hard to advise on that. What's true is true; it’s hard to squeeze the good bits into less than an hour. If you have a good Haggadah and interested, active invitees, it can last until the morning.

5. Prepare, prepare, prepare

You'll have a good Seder if you have a good plan, are prepared and know when you want to ask, do, show and tell.

6. Know your audience

Who will be around the table? Will some people are attending Seder for the first time? Then it would help if you kept that in mind too. It's also safe to say that even those who attend regularly won't remember everything, as it's once a year. Make it interactive, and if there are children, you also need to think about how you'll tie them down, so there's something to snack on the table.

7. Are we there yet?

There will always be people at the table who are impatient, wanting to get to dinner already. People who ask you to skip portions. Don't do it! Don't rush through the Seder under any circumstances, or you'll lose the point.

8. Hebrew?

There's that feeling when three out of twenty people around the table know the Hebrew words to songs and prayers, and the rest of us sit there in silence and feel uncomfortable. Some may think they are bad Jews. That is not the feeling we want to dominate the Seder. Then have plenty of Hebrew if you know that most of your guests understand it; otherwise, keep it to a minimum.

9. Table decorations, drinking games and other entertainment

The Pesach story gives you many opportunities to make the Seder more fun. You can put reeds on the table to make it look like the Red Sea, pillows to lean on as free men, props to represent the ten plagues. You can even play drinking games if you have a big enough crowd.
